medRxiv to PLOS: Direct preprint transfers

Authors with preprints on the new health sciences preprint server medRxiv now have the option to transfer their manuscripts for publication consideration at relevant PLOS journals in the topic area, PLOS Medicine, PLOS NTDs, or PLOS ONE. PLOS is excited to be among the first publishers to offer direct transfer service from the new server.

Earlier this summer, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) announced the launch of medRxiv, a preprint server specifically designed for the health sciences. A corollary to CSHL’s popular bioRxiv platform, founded in 2013, medRxiv offers the same quick and easy posting process, plus an additional enhanced screening process to protect patient information, ensure high ethical standards, and guard against posting any potentially harmful health information.

Publicly posting preprints benefits the research community broadly, as well as individual scientists. Sharing results early accelerates the pace of scientific advancement while helping to avoid unnecessary duplication of effort. In the health sciences specifically, preprints can be an effective tool for sharing information during an outbreak. Preprints empower researchers to choose when and how their work is shared, opening new opportunities to collaborate, earn credit and citations, and get helpful feedback–even as the manuscript undergoes peer review at a journal.

We’re thrilled to welcome medRxiv as the newest addition to the Open Science community, and look forward to continuing to develop our collaboration together in future.
